Nan's Recipes: Phoebe Treats

Phoebe Treats

These dog treats are Phoebe's favorite reward and one of the reasons she loves doing agility. They're my favorites because they're sort of leathery so they don't get your hands messy, they don't leave a trail of crumbs to distract other dogs, they can be torn into little tiny pieces so a little can go a long way, and they are easy to make. If you store them in the freezer in a ziplock bag, you can shake out a few pieces when you need them. The only downside is if you don't have an oven exhaust, your house has a strange smell when they're baking .

7 oz. package of smoked fish
5 egg whites or 3 whole eggs
1 cup of shredded cheese
1 cup flour

Put everything in a cuisinart or blender. Blend to a paste.
Spread paste onto a non-stick or an lightly oiled baking sheet with a spatula until it's about 1/8 to 1/4" thick (about 9" x 12").
Bake at 350 degrees 20 to 30 minutes until the surface is lightly browned and leathery.
Cut with scissors or a knife into 1" strips, then into 1" squares.
Store in freezer in a ziplock bag.

Ingredient notes: I use Ducktrap Smoked Mackerel which costs about $5.00 here. I remove the skin (which the dogs love as a snack) before blending. I think you could use sardines or leftover salmon, possibly even liver. Any cheese will do, some inexpensive cheddar or Monteray Jack for example.
